About Awareness Through Movement®
Awareness Through Movement (ATM) classes offer something a little different from your typical movement classes.
Each of the hundreds of lessons devised by Dr Feldenkrais is more than just a series of exercises; it’s a dynamic process of discovery.
As you explore how you move, you begin to tune into the subtle differences in your sensations, allowing your system to naturally organise around easier and more efficient ways of moving.
From an outside perspective, you might see participants lying on the floor, kneeling, sitting, or standing while a practitioner verbally guides them through a series of subtle, carefully crafted movements. They may lift a shoulder, roll a leg, or perform even smaller, almost imperceptible movements, sometimes imagining them.
The real magic of ATM happens within. As you engage with the suggested movements, you’re invited to explore the sensations that arise. Much like how infants experiment with different movements as they develop their motor skills, Awareness Through Movement encourages you to approach your own movement with curiosity and openness.
Rather than striving for 'right' or 'wrong' results, this practice focuses on your personal explorations and discoveries of what feels most effective for you. Each adjustment and variation provides new information that guides you towards more harmonious ways of moving, deepening your connection with your whole self and enhancing your overall sense of ease and comfort in everyday activities.
For me, ATM is an invitation to slow down, check in, and come home to myself. This practice has taught me to become my own best teacher, helping me to adapt to the unpredictabilities of life.
ATM is often a deeply personal experience. It offers a chance to step away from the hectic demands of the outside world and reconnect with yourself in a gentle and attentive way.
This practice can provide a powerful tool for enhancing vitality, flexibility, coordination, overall well-being, and, of course, efficiency in movement. As you move through the lessons, you too may uncover the profound sense of returning home to a place of inner calm, balance, self-awareness and presence. This experience can be a gateway to rediscovering the joys in everyday life and finding pleasure in every movement, one mindful step at a time.
