My Feldenkrais Story…

It was in my first week as an undergraduate at music college. Our movement class took place in the rehearsal room of an old theatre, the smell of dusty wooden floorboards, reminiscent of an old school assembly hall, filled the air. I took two puffs of my inhaler and laid down on my mat ready to follow the teacher's instructions.

Initially, the instructions seemed peculiar, yet they caught my curiosity, I felt something change within me. The ache in my back began to dissolve, and the pain in my shoulder vanished. For 45 minutes, I engaged curiously in these seemingly magical and unconventional movements. When I stood up, a profound feeling surged through my entire being.

In that dusty room, amidst the creaking floorboards, I experienced the feeling of being present for the first time in conscious memory. Time slowed down, I stood taller, I breathed easier, my voice was effortlessly resonant, and I felt invincible.

That was my first experience of the Feldenkrais Method. As a performer, I instantly saw the benefit of this practice, but there was so much more to it. What followed were years of immersing myself in this work: reading extensively, attending Awareness Through Movement classes, and receiving Functional Integration lessons. I became captivated. With each session, I grew taller, my thoughts clearer, my self-worth enhanced, I was moving effortlessly and my physical pain dissipated.

I later graduated with a master’s degree in Professional Voice Practice from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and subsequently coached singers and speakers, worked as a voice lecturer in several drama schools, universities, and colleges across the country and provided voice support in theatre productions.

Then came a pivotal moment when the time was right to enrol on the 4-Year Feldenkrais Practitioner training through Feldenkrais London. This was the best decision of my life.
